Kennett Cup / South Island Cross Country Championships

South Island Cross Country
Race day was fine but windy and the soft conditions proved challenging after several laps. Ruth Love-Smith and Ronalda Reid won their respective age groups in the Masters event. The Senior Men's race provided some great spectating as the lead changed around in the early stages. Hayden McLaren surged in the final lap to outpace Callan Moody and with Dan Balchin 4th and Kerry Faass 7th overall, the men's Teams race was won convincingly by New Brighton Olympic. Check out Dave Ridley's video of the race on YouTube.

Full results are available on the Athletics Canterbury website. See the club's facebook page for photos of club members competing - senior men and other grades.

Jane Paterson Cross Country Races (Saturday, 17th May 2014)

Saturday 17th May was a gorgeous autumn day for cross-country races. The sun was out, although there was still a little surface water on the course. We had runners from the junior ranks up and some notable performances as well. Oska Inkster-Baynes, passing through Christchurch after a week training in Nelson with Phil Costley, showed the Senior men a clean pair of heels and won the event with a lead of over 4 minutes. Kerry Faass took out the Masters title. Clive Kitchingman and Ron McTaggert were 2nd in their respective age groups while Ruth Love-Smith and Ronalda Reid won theirs, boosting our masters women to second place in the Teams' race.

New Balance 15k Road Race 2014 (Saturday, 10th May)

New Balance 15k Road Race
On a fine early winter morning on the outskirts of Lincoln, the field in the NB15k Road Race took off and it took less than 2 minutes for the Senior Men's race to settle into a pack challenge. By the start of lap 2, the pack was down to 6 runners and they had left the rest of the field a good 2 minutes in their wake. About 2k from the finish, Callan Moody called on his track speed and came home 12 seconds ahead of Mark Bailey who, 2 years away from his 40th birthday, is still showing the young lads what they have to live up to. Thanks to the healthy competition, the first 6 runners all came in with a faster time than Callan ran to win last year.

NBOL runner Kerry Faass took out the Masters men title. Stephanie Rumble was 2nd in her age group and Clive Kitchingman was 3rd in the 50 plus age group race. Nigel Whalley won the walk category and Hayden Zervos was first in the under 19 age group.

See the 15k race website for results and photos.
