Records for Ron

Long standing Olympic Club Member Ron Stevens began running in 1954, with more than half a century of running under his belt Ron's motivation, competitiveness, team spirit and comaraderie of the sport have never wavered. Most recently Ron has broken the New Zealand record for M75 in both the 5000m (21:50:57) and 10000m (44:11:76) track events. QSM for former Olympic Member

A former member of the Olympic Harrier Club, Brian Curle, was awarded the Queen's Service Medal (QSM) in the recently awarded New Years Honours. Brian was awarded the QSM for his services to youth, sport and the community.

Brian, a class runner in his day, was a member of the Club from 1950 to 1969 when he shifted to Hamilton/Huntly. In 1981 he founded and organised the Huntly Half Marathon which is still in existence today. Congratulation Brian, we are proud to be associated with you.

Tai Tapu 15k Road Race - Previously known as the Rossendale 15k Road Race

The 15k event organised by the Olympic Harrier Club in May of each year will no longer be sponsored by Rossendale Winery - we thank them for their support over the last twelve years, and are now looking forward to giving the event a face lift in 2008.

There will be an exciting course, following much of the traditional route along the Old Tai Tapu Rd but starting and finishing at the Tai Tapu Domain. As always, it will be lightning fast, and should attract entries from Canterbury's finest distance runners. Further announcements regarding sponsors and course details will be made in the New Year.

Summer Running

There is plenty of running over the summer months to keep you fit. Olympic's Monday/Wednesday training groups continue throughout the year. See more info here.

Canterbury Masters have a Summer Athletics Programme. You need to join up with the Masters Association to participate in these events. For further information contact Bill Carter

Canterbury Athletics provides both road and track programmes over the summer. The road programme includes three 5k series events, one in December, February and March. There are a couple of good 10k races and the classic 10 miler in Ashburton at Easter. For Registered runners the Canterbury 10,000m Track Champs are on 21st December.

If you are wanting to improve your running speed get on down to QE2 for the track season. There are all distances from sprints to 5000m. You don't need to have track running experience but need to be registered. The atmosphere is friendly and supportive and good advice is not hard to come by. More info at the Canterbury Athletics website.

So there is no excuse get out there and enjoy getting fit over the summer months.
