Ron's Records

Ron StevensSaturday was a sizzler at QEII and that wasn't just because of the temperature. Spurred on by his 'missed by a whisker' 800 run the week before, Ron Stevens scorched down the home straight and claimed the NZ over 75 1500m record by 3 seconds. Ron ran 5:54 and some milliseconds, according to the buzz at the finish line, although the official timing may be minutely different. Congratulations, Ron.

His was not the only red singlet in view. Our club was well represented, with Tony, Clive, Peters L and C, Heather, Anne and myself all turning up to race.

I hope to see some red singlets tomorrow night at the 5k in Hagley Park. Don't forget the Pier to Pier series which is coming up soon and has been moved to a Sunday morning.

You can read a full interview with Ron given last year here.

Yvonne's Seat

As a permanent memorial to Yvonne, Chris with the help of Phil Costley has put in a seat at the Bottle Lake Forest. The seat is situated in a beautiful setting next to a pond. To locate Yvonne's seat, park in the small car park at the end of Bower Ave and walk north up the forest road where Bower Ave ends. You will find Yvonne's seat about 100m up on the left next to a small pond.

Congratulations Ron Stevens

Training 50km a week with plenty of speed work and the odd cha cha or samba in the mix, Ron always has a goal in his sites. This summer's track season is no exception.

Ron's 55years of running has not dampened his enthusiasm for the sport. Over the last couple of months Ron's distinctive upright striding form (the envy of many runners half his age), has been quick stepping around the athletic track breaking records from 800m to 10,000m.

Ron's latest record, the M75 10000m was run at the Canterbury 10000m Championships at QE2 stadium on Saturday 20th December. The conditions were unseasonably cool and damp, some would say ideal. Ron consumed the 25.5 laps in 43:51.73, clipping a good 16 seconds off the previous record he himself set in 2007.

In the month previous Ron has made his mark at the South Island Masters Championships held at Memorial Park, Mosgiel. Running his first 800m championship race in 40 years, Ron stopped the clock at 3min 1.7sec lowering the record by 11.2 seconds. Ron also broke the 1500m and 3000m age group records(M75-79) at this same meeting.

Ron's 2008/09 Track Season Records
800m - 3min 1.7sec
1500m - 6min 00.7sec
