Shoe Clinic Asics 5k Series Race 1 (Tuesday, 7 January 2014)
The first race of the series was held last night on a warm evening notable for the absence of the fierce easterly that can often blight a race in Hagley Park. We had a good representation in the registered race with Mark Bailey really laying down a challenge to the younger senior men by winning in 15 mins flat and coming in 52 secs ahead of the second runner. Kerry Faass was 6th in 16:21. There was also a terrific performance from 11 year old Corban Straker who ran 22:11. Full results are available on the Athletics Canterbury website.

Lovelock Classic Track & Field Meet (Saturday, 4 January 2014)
The Lovelock Classic Meet in Timaru in early January features a mile race in honour of the legendary Jack Lovelock. This year's event was won in commanding fashion by Daniel Balchin in a time of 4:14. He was presented with a trophy donated by the retiring Rector of Timaru Boys High, Kevin O'Sullivan, himself a Timaru native and an athlete and administrator of renown.
The base of the the trophy is made of oak from the Lovelock oak (brought back as a seedling from the Berlin Olympics - Border security need not apply) in the grounds of Timaru Boys High. Daniel's name is the first to go on this trophy. Full results are availble from the Athletics New Zealand website.
