Jane Paterson Cross Country Races (Saturday, 17th May 2014)

Saturday 17th May was a gorgeous autumn day for cross-country races. The sun was out, although there was still a little surface water on the course. We had runners from the junior ranks up and some notable performances as well. Oska Inkster-Baynes, passing through Christchurch after a week training in Nelson with Phil Costley, showed the Senior men a clean pair of heels and won the event with a lead of over 4 minutes. Kerry Faass took out the Masters title. Clive Kitchingman and Ron McTaggert were 2nd in their respective age groups while Ruth Love-Smith and Ronalda Reid won theirs, boosting our masters women to second place in the Teams' race.

New Balance 15k Road Race 2014 (Saturday, 10th May)

New Balance 15k Road Race
On a fine early winter morning on the outskirts of Lincoln, the field in the NB15k Road Race took off and it took less than 2 minutes for the Senior Men's race to settle into a pack challenge. By the start of lap 2, the pack was down to 6 runners and they had left the rest of the field a good 2 minutes in their wake. About 2k from the finish, Callan Moody called on his track speed and came home 12 seconds ahead of Mark Bailey who, 2 years away from his 40th birthday, is still showing the young lads what they have to live up to. Thanks to the healthy competition, the first 6 runners all came in with a faster time than Callan ran to win last year.

NBOL runner Kerry Faass took out the Masters men title. Stephanie Rumble was 2nd in her age group and Clive Kitchingman was 3rd in the 50 plus age group race. Nigel Whalley won the walk category and Hayden Zervos was first in the under 19 age group.

Lovelock Relay, Dunedin (Saturday, 3rd May 2014)

A New Brighton Olympic Team laden with past Otago talent proved it is more than worthy as the 2013 National Road Relay Champion, scoring a resounding victory in the Lovelock Relay at the Otago University Oval on Saturday 3rd May. The team of Callan Moody, Nick Rennie, Oska Inkster-Baynes, Dave Ridley, Matt Gibbons and Daniel Balchin put the result beyond doubt right from the start, with Moody clocking the fastest 1500m time of the day, 4 min 2 sec, on the soft surface of the University Oval to open up an 8 sec lead.

With four of the 6 member New Brighton Olympic team being past Otago Champions, it was a way to connect with their past and support the event. Matt Gibbons believes the Club will be keen to return next year to defend their title. The Otago Daily Times covered the race with a couple of articles including photos of the team. See the following links to their post-race and pre-race write-ups.

This result is another sign that the depth of the Senior Men New Brighton Olympic Club means that there will be intense competition for the eight spots in the 2014 National Road Relay Team for a club keen to repeat their 2013 victory. And let's not forget the Over 60 Team who were 3rd last year. Goodie, get those training shoes on!

Hagley Memorial Relay

Saturday April 26th was a glorious day weather-wise and was also a great day for our Club around Hagley Park. Our junior runners took on the soft course at noon and we were keen to see how our Men's Senior team would manage the transition from the Road to Akaroa to the soggy circuit around Hagley Park. Callan put the pedal down from the start and Mark Bailey increased the lead in lap 2 whilst recording the fastest Masters time and after that it was just a question of how much the winning margin would be. 3 minutes and 2 seconds as it turned out. NBO took out the title comfortably. Our runners were 6 of the first 8 senior men. A great start to the season for the Senior Men. Their second Team was 6th and Matt Gibbons ran a cracking first lap in 13:45 to be 7th SM overall. Our Masters Womens team was second in their grade. Everyone who ran can be proud of their effort. It was a good start to the Winter season.
